Best cheese I’ve ever eaten is in the Allgäu in the German Alps. We hiked up to the top of the mountain and stayed here:
You can either take a gondola to the top or hike in. Most folks hike from outpost to outpost.
Each night we fell asleep to the sound of cowbells and rain.
We hiked down the mountain,
and arrived at this meadow. In the summer the cows are brought up to the top of the mountain. In the fall they come back to these meadows to eat all the wildflowers and grass. Then they put them inside the barns with the snows come.
At the bottom of the mountain was a river. It always begins and ends with water, no?
Then we went into Obertsdorf and had a beer and then checked out the church.
The next day we went to Neuschwanstein Castle, you know, the one Disney copied. It literally translates to New Swan Stone castle. Mad King Ludwig the second drowned himself in the lake, all the money and power and still . . .
Then back to the homestead in the Pfaltz.
